Adventure Tourism Development Index for Destinations

Adventure Tourism Development Index for Destinations

“If Peru’s Adventure Tourism Development Index (ATDI) were to rise by 10%, its international tourism arrivals could expect to increase by 14%.” Such statements support the value proposition of developing tourism policy and advocacy around  adventure travel attractiveness.

The ATDI 2015 is recently published and ranks countries by a matrix of criteria such as environmental and cultural sustainability policies.  The 10 pillars of competitiveness are:

  1. Sustainable Development Policy
  2. Safety and Security
  3. Health
  4. Natural Resources
  5. Cultural Resources
  6. Adventure Activity Resources
  7. Entrepreneurship
  8. Humanitarian
  9. Tourism Infrastructure
  10. Image

The index does not grade countries by popularity, but by how well they do in each of the above dimensions. Countries are divided into two groups: developed and developing. This year there were some significant shifts. For example Canada dropped by 4 spots due to decreases in the  health and humanitarian pillars. Monaco rose by 6 points by increases in humanitarian and health. In developing countries, Serbia and Moldova jumped 32 and 28 points while Cape Verde and Syria each dropped substantially.ATDI
